Church of the Home for Saturday, February 15

Celebrating Black History Month

This month, Resurrection continues to love all people all the time by celebrating Black History Month. This annual observance celebrates the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The month-long celebration originated from “Negro History Week,” established in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Black History Month serves as a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of African Americans, highlighting the significant roles they have played in shaping history and culture.

Celebrating Black History as a Church of the Home can be a deeply enriching experience that honors the contributions and heritage of African Americans, especially those in the Catholic faith. Black Catholics have made substantial contributions to the Church, despite facing systemic racism and segregation.

The Black Catholic Movement, which gained momentum in the 1960s and 1970s, was a pivotal period that saw the integration of African American culture into Catholic worship and community life. This movement led to the incorporation of gospel music and African American spirituals into the Mass, creating a unique and vibrant expression of faith. Figures like Fr. Clarence Rivers were instrumental in this cultural integration, helping to shape a distinctive Black Catholic identity.

One way to start is by learning about the lives of Black saints and venerable figures within the Catholic Church. Families can participate in events at UWGB or read stories or watch documentaries about figures such as St. Peter Claver, St. Martin de Porres, St. Josephine Bakhita, Venerable Pierre Toussaint, Venerable August Tolton, and Servant of God Thea Bowman (a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration of La Crosse, WI). This not only educates but also inspires family members by showcasing the resilience and faith of these individuals.
